The NGS Supervisor will manage and oversee the daily operations of the Lab Services' library preparation team for next generation sequencing (NGS) projects. The Supervisor will be responsible for ensuring the day-to-day activities are completed in accordance with the designated Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s) and Key Performance Indicators (KPI’s), including but not limited to quantification and normalization of gDNA, creation of NGS libraries meeting customer satisfaction; and providing internal QC reports before submitting the NGS product for sequencing and analysis.
The Supervisor will guide and coordinate a set of technicians, as well as the designated operational resources, within a local Lab Services team. This role is expected to partner with members of the Lab Services team to ensure the appropriate execution of operational deliverables and KPI’s within designated area of remit. In partnership with site HR and operational leadership, this individual is expected to foster a positive work environment and a culture of ownership and accountability.
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each of the following essential functions satisfactorily:
Manage a team of lab services staff and the execution/improvement of its responsibilities to support the organization’s NGS Operations. Duties of the team include receiving, examining, and queuing customer samples; extraction nucleic acid from customer samples, and evaluating the quality of extracted material to ensure it meets specifications for use in downstream workflows
Partner with Project Management and NGS laboratory team to provide NGS sample libraries that meet operational and quality standards, as well as customer/project deadlines
Responsible for personnel activities of direct reports including training, performance evaluations, goal setting and setting employee objectives to business initiatives and other key performance indicators
Perform manufacturing, quality control, distribution, materials management, and services maintenance activities in a manner that meets customer needs; independently perform assigned duties in these areas and direct the priorities of more junior scientists in this area
Represent the Lab Operations team within the larger NGS Services group; plan, schedule and manage assigned functions in coordination with Project Management and Lab Services teams to ensure customer projects are completed on time and the data is of high-quality
Create or devise new protocols or processes to support efficient and effective workflows in conjunction with Process Development, R&D, or Service Operations at other LGC facilities
Process, record, and analyze data following approved protocols and established good documentation practices
Assist in identifying and implementing process improvement opportunities based on first-hand observation and data review; may lead cross-functional teams in this area
Perform other duties as required to meet business and operational needs
Education/Experience/Licenses/Certifications
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in relevant life sciences field (e.g. molecular biology, microbiology, biochemistry)
Prior experience generating high-quality NGS sample libraries
Proven track record leading a cross-functional team to successfully meet designated project goals and/or KPI’s
Demonstrated behavioral skills and emotional resilience to effectively manage and direct a team of operations associates and technicians
Desire to manage and develop employees in a functional area of rapid growth
Demonstrated experience with development and implementation of new technologies and technical processes that improve the quality, efficiency, and/or productivity of laboratory services
Working knowledge of Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
Preferred Qualifications:
Prior experience in staff management and professional development of teams
Thorough understanding of NGS library preparation and sequencing technologies
Experience using a laboratory information management system (LIMS)
Familiarity with high-throughput automation
