Job Description
The Clinical Nutrition, Clinical Coordinator reflects the mission, vision, and values of NM, adheres to the organization’s Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program, and complies with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines and all other regulatory and accreditation standards.
The Clinical Nutrition Clinical Coordinator is a registered and licensed dietitian who has demonstrated providing individualized nutrition interventions and medical nutrition therapy based on evidence- based practices and the Nutrition Care Process.
Under the direction of the department manager, the Clinical Coordinator ensures compliance with the standards for registered dietitians as established by professional organizations, regulatory agencies, accreditation boards, and objective professional literature.
The Clinical Coordinator contributes to employee professional and clinical practice development and strives to attain the highest level of professional practice in the industry.
In addition to providing direct patient care, they are accountable for facilitating an interdisciplinary approach to patient care, patient flow, staffing, resource utilization, and problem solving on a given shift.
Under the direction of the Clinical Nutrition Manager, the Clinical Nutrition Clinical Coordinator demonstrates effective leadership and problem-solving skills, identifies learning needs of the Clinical Nutrition Department and those it serves, supports collaborative education and team building, and participates in interdisciplinary quality initiatives to enhance clinical care and patient outcomes.
The Clinical Nutrition Clinical Coordinator adheres to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Scope and Standards of Practice and Code of Ethics for Nutrition and Dietetics Professionals.
The Nutrition Coordinator reflects the mission, vision, and values of the Clinical Nutrition Department.
Responsibilities:
Facilitates clinical nutrition operations according to policy, procedure, and regulatory requirements.
Collaborates with multidisciplinary teams and with appropriate hospital departments to ensure exceptional patient care coordination and quality excellence.
Coordinates staffing assignments on a daily basis to achieve high quality and cost-effective care, including schedule changes, and at the elbow dietitian care needs.
Champions new initiatives and participates in unit/departmental or hospital wide committees/task forces.
Develops and implements appropriate actions plans to provide safe, quality, and efficient care and proposed practice changes to provide safe, quality, and efficient care.
Rounds directly with patients, dietitians, and interdisciplinary team to assess dietitian care.
Communicates directly with patients, family members, visitors, and other hospital departments as necessary.
Assumes accountability for efficient and effective use of time and effort of all staff.
Assesses and intervenes in critical situations involving patients, staff, and visitors and consults with manager for guidance as needed.
Provides feedback to clinical nutrition manager regarding staff performance (i.e. staff development needs).
Participates in interviewing and onboarding process.
Establishes relationships across departments to optimize patient care.
Participates in formal and informal education of the staff, including dietitians, advanced dietitians, and dietetic interns including inpatient and outpatient areas that report to the Clinical Nutrition Department.
Coordinates and participates in unit specific orientation process in conjunction with the NMH Academy, peers, managers, and the Department of Professional Development.
Provides and documents quarterly and annual clinical competency evaluations.
Collaborates on developmental plans for individual staff and supports their ongoing plans.
Identifies strengths and weaknesses of employees to properly assess employee growth and need for training/education throughout the year.
Maintains standards of practice relevant to specific clinical settings.
Provides direct patient care as needed and through the role as clinical instructor during orientation of new hires.
Is assigned one day in staffing every pay period, rotating service lines.
Assesses and intervenes in critical situations involving patients, staff, and visitors and consults with manager or administrator for guidance as needed.
Assists in interview process for all positions within the department.
Oversight of dietetic internship rotations in conjunction with internship preceptors.
Departmental mentorship for performance improvement, quality, and performance management projects and ensures alignment with departmental and hospital vision, mission, and goals.
Attends and participates in Hospital and System Steering Committees.
Acts as an EMR superuser and involves team in changes and updates.
Assist manager with departmental and hospital policy updates.
Completes orders of supplies as needed for the department.
Assists with timekeeping and monitors productivity for quality and efficiency.
Participates in unit/departmental/divisional or hospital committees/task forces as assigned.
Remains clinically proficient within area of expertise.
Pulls data as assigned by manager and reports out on department score card.
Creates analytics/IS requests and projects and sees them through.
Develops action plans involving whole nutrition team to improve scorecard metrics.
Develops action plans around proposed practice changes and participates in the NMH HSCC’s Identify quality management monitors and facilitate the ongoing collection of data to support improvement clinical and operational outcomes
Qualifications
Required:
Bachelors of Science in Nutrition/Dietetics if graduated prior to 2024.
Master’s degree in nutrition or related field if graduated after 2023.
State of Illinois licensure: Licensed Dietitian Nutritionist (LDN).
Minimum of five years’ experience in a clinical setting as a practicing dietitian.
Specialty certification recognized by the AND and CDR.
Demonstrates alignment with NMH Core Values of integrity, excellence, patients first, and teamwork.
Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
Ability to plan, organize, educate, and supervise the work of other dietitians.
Proficient in NFPE and malnutrition diagnosis.
Membership of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and/or ASPE
Preferred:
Master’s degree in Nutrition or related field (if graduated prior to 2024; required after 2023).
At least one year employment at NMH with a PMP of outstanding performer or role model.
At least 2 years of leadership experience in healthcare or related setting.
Demonstrated project management experience.
Experience in teaching a variety of learners.
Proficient in Excel, PowerPoint, and EMR.
