Orthopaedics SHO Doctor at IMPERIAL COLLEGE HEALTHCARE NHS TRUST
London, United Kingdom

Job Descrption
An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Major Trauma Service at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust.

The London Trauma System went fully live across all four trauma networks in January 2011 at four Major Trauma Centres (MTCs), located at The Royal London Hospital, King's College Hospital, St George's Hospital and St Mary's Hospital. The networks are formally linked into areas adjacent to London, giving a total resident population served by the London Trauma System of 12 million people. In addition to this number there is a significant transient working commuter population, approximately 1.1M people per day and tourists of which there were 21 million visits in 2019.

Data from LAS demonstrates that the St Mary’s MTC consistently receives around 35% of all patients in London who trigger the Major Trauma Tool. The department is seeing now over 3000 trauma calls per annum, and around 700-800 patients in the most injured category (Injury Severity Score ISS

15). The unit was... fundamental in managing trauma patients affected by the 2017 major incidents across London.

St Mary’s Major Trauma Service consists of Consultants drawn from general surgery, vascular, neurosurgery, orthopaedic and plastics services. The service is supported by Consultants and Registrars from neurosurgery, cardiothoracic, anaesthetics, radiology, intensive care, plastics, vascular, general surgery, and visiting consultants from other specialist centres to support burns and maxillofacial requirements.

The appointee will work alongside the existing junior doctors, under the supervision of the Major Trauma Consultants, to care for those patients who are brought to St Marys as a result of a major trauma call. Currently 50-70 trauma calls attend A&E each week, with around 60% requiring admission. The post holders will be responsible for attending trauma calls, admitting trauma patients and for managing these patients on the Major Trauma Ward until the patient’s condition allows safe transfer to other wards, units and hospitals under single specialities.

There is currently responsibility for looking after acute non-traumatic Neurosurgery patients as well. There are 5 added SHO’s from the neurosurgery service to help strengthen the current rota. There is wide exposure to a variety of conditions as a result of major trauma and the work of the academic unit, as well as ample opportunity to learn and perfect practical procedures.

The post holders will work as part of an EWTD compliant full shift rota to ensure that cover is provided within the Unit. The out of hours work will be carried out under the Consultant’s supervision for the management of all appropriate patients.

The statutory requirement to be fully Covid-19 vaccinated as a condition of employment from April 2022 is subject to legislative review. At Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, we strongly encourage and support vaccination uptake as this remains the best line of defence against COVID19. The successful applicant may have contact with patients and service users and as part of our pre-employment checks and risk assessments, we will ask all candidates to confirm whether or not they have been fully vaccinated or have a medical exemption.

We are committed to equal opportunities and improving the working lives of our staff and will consider applications to work flexibly, part-time or job share. Please talk to us at interview.

The post holders will be involved with trauma calls, outpatient’s clinics, research, audit and presentations at the various postgraduate teaching meetings. Operative training in theatre is encouraged across all the presenting specialties with opportunities in neurosurgery, orthopaedics, vascular, plastics and general surgery cases. The post holder will also have the opportunity to be involved in ITU ward rounds and critical care of trauma patients. There are plenty of opportunities to be involved in all aspects of a trauma patient’s care with a multi-disciplinary team approach to patient management.
