Role Description

This is a workshop and onsite based role for Freelance Carpenters, Set Builders, and Scenic Artists at Rule One Production Ltd. The role involves tasks such as bespoke carpentry, joinery and general set building, sprayed paint finishes, scenic, prop making, & set dressing applications creating bespoke installations to elevate retail spaces and live events.

1. High-End Carpenter & Joiner

Essential Experience:

Carpentry & Joinery Expertise: Minimum 5+ years of experience in high-end... carpentry and joinery, with a strong focus on precision work and attention to detail in luxury settings, such as event environments, retail fit-outs, or bespoke interiors.
• Technical Skills: Proficient in using both hand tools and advanced woodworking machinery (e.g., CNC routers, saws, sanders) to create high-quality, custom-built pieces. Ability to work with a variety of materials including wood, MDF, laminates, and veneers.
• Cabinetry & Furniture Making: Extensive experience in creating custom cabinets, shelving units, display cases, and high-end furniture, adhering to specific design requirements and quality standards.
• Technical Drawing Interpretation: Ability to read, interpret, and work from technical drawings, blueprints, and CAD designs, ensuring accuracy in measurements and construction.
• On-Site Installation: Experience with fitting joinery and carpentry elements on-site, ensuring seamless integration with other build components during installation in retail or event environments.
• Attention to Detail: Strong focus on finish quality, including the use of high-grade materials and the ability to achieve fine finishes, seamless joins, and smooth edges.
• Health & Safety Knowledge: Comprehensive understanding of health and safety regulations within workshop and on-site environments, ensuring safe practices during construction and installation.

2. Set Builder

Essential Experience:

Set Construction Experience: 5+ years of experience in set construction for events, exhibitions, theatre, or retail environments, with a focus on building high-quality, structurally sound, and visually impressive sets.
• Knowledge of Materials: Expertise in working with a range of materials such as wood, metal, plastics, and composite materials. Skilled in selecting the appropriate materials for the design and function of the set.
• Modular & Custom Set Building: Experience building both modular set pieces for ease of transportation and assembly, as well as fully custom, large-scale set designs tailored to specific event or retail environments.
• Problem-Solving Skills: Ability to troubleshoot construction challenges and find creative solutions on-site under tight deadlines.
• Collaboration: Experience working with designers, project managers, scenic artists, and production teams to bring conceptual designs to life, ensuring the final build meets creative expectations.
• Assembly & Dismantling: Proficiency in assembling, disassembling, and reconfiguring sets efficiently during live events, exhibitions, or store installations.
• Technical Drawings: Ability to work from technical drawings, ensuring accurate builds in accordance with design specifications.

3. Scenic Artist

Essential Experience:

Scenic Artistry Experience: 5+ years of experience as a scenic artist working in event environments, theatre, exhibitions, or high-end retail fit-outs, creating visually striking and detailed scenic elements.
• Surface Treatment Skills: Expertise in painting, texturing, and finishing techniques, including faux finishes, marbling, wood graining, rust effects, ageing/distressing, and large-scale mural work.
• Color Matching & Mixing: Ability to mix and match colours accurately to replicate design palettes, ensuring continuity between design concepts and final execution.
• 3D & Textural Effects: Skilled in creating three-dimensional or textured effects using a variety of materials such as plaster, foam, or fabric to add depth and realism to scenic elements.
• Collaborative Approach: Experience working closely with set designers, carpenters, and production teams to ensure the final aesthetic vision is achieved.
• Large-Scale Scenic Projects: Comfortable with creating large-scale backdrops, stage designs, and feature walls, with the ability to work efficiently under time constraints.
• Detail-Oriented: High level of precision in applying finishes, ensuring that scenic elements are polished and meet the high standards required for luxury events or retail environments.

These roles require creativity, technical proficiency, and a high level of craftsmanship to execute visually stunning and structurally sound projects. All candidates must demonstrate a strong portfolio of past work in luxury environments with a keen eye for detail and the ability to meet client expectations under tight deadlines.
