Microsoft Start (MSN) Content Ecosystem & Growth (CE&G) team is responsible for building a content powerhouse with 7000 active brands worldwide to captivate the attention of our 100M+ daily active users. CE&G is expanding and transforming content corpus from predominantly news to covering a wide range of niche topics. Quality of the content is instrumental to the success of Start feed across a wide range of products like Windows, Edge, Super app, Skype, and Outlook. CE&G ensures the trust and safety of all content leveraging the power of LLMs.
As a Principal Applied Science Manager, you will bring deep applied science expertise and a proven track record of shipping at-scale AI-enabled content moderation and intelligence capabilities. You would work in an exciting and fast-paced environment, collaborating closely with teams across the company, including Microsoft Research, Responsible AI and various product groups. You will work as part of an organization that brings together talent in the areas of large language models, deep learning, information retrieval, software engineering, and customer experience. Responsibilities
- Manage an innovative applied science team in the area of Large Language Models, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning and Deep Learning.
- Technical leadership in an applied science team in the area of Large Language Models, Natural Language Processing, Machine Learning and Deep Learning.
- Develop and deploy content moderation and content intelligence models at scale.
- Knowledgeable in trust and safety standards and ability to enforce these policies across all modalities such as text, image and videos.
- Experience in launching and improving full lifecycle systems that learn and improve over time.
- Following and advancing best practices for Responsible AI and Privacy Preserving Machine Learning.
- Support hiring, coaching, mentoring and career development of Applied Scientists to build an inclusive and ambitious applied science team.
- Collaborate closely with product teams to create the next generation of AI innovation in our products and services.
- Communicate internally and externally through well written documents and presentations.
Qualifications
Required/Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 6+ years related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research)
- OR Master's Degree in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 4+ years related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research)
- OR Doctorate in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 3+ years related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research)
- OR equivalent experience.
- 1+ year(s) people management experience.
Additional or Preferred Qualifications
- Master's Degree in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 9+ years related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research)
- OR Doctorate in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 6+ years related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research)
- OR equivalent experience.
- 5+ years people management experience.
- 5+ years experience creating publications (e.g., patents, libraries, peer-reviewed academic papers).
- 5+ years experience conducting research as part of a research program (in academic or industry settings).
- 3+ years experience developing and deploying live production systems, as part of a product team.
- 3+ years experience developing and deploying products or systems at multiple points in the product cycle from ideation to shipping.
- 2+ years experience presenting at conferences or other events in the outside research/industry community as an invited speaker.
- Computer Vision experience
- Experienced and skilled in applied science or engineering teams in Machine Learning, Natural Language Processing, or related fields and proven technical background in coding and design, specifically in the development of AI models for scaled production services.
- Demonstrated success in shipping applied research to production, highlighting a proven track record of combining coding skills with advanced expertise in AI model development.
Applied Sciences M5 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $133,600 - $256,800 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $173,200 - $282,200 per year.
