Summary
Laboratory Assistant performs routine technical and clerical functions. Laboratory Assistant performs venipuncture, specimen receipt and distribution of laboratory specimens; may perform CLIA waived laboratory tests. Responsible for the collections of blood specimens ensuring patient safety and consistency with age-specific considerations for all patients, neonates, infants, adolescents, adults and geriatrics, as well as employees. Laboratory Assistant completes established competencies for the position within designated introductory period. Other related duties as assigned, such as driving on occasion. Due to the nature of Laboratory Services, it may become necessary to require employees to work extended hours or other variations of the usual shift to ensure adequate care of patients and maintain service to the community
Qualifications
Education
Required: High school diploma or equivalent
Preferred: Completion of phlebotomy program
Experience
Required: Ability to complete blood draws independently within six-weeks of hire
Preferred: 6 months of laboratory experience
Certifications
REQUIRED COURSES/COMPLETIONS (e.g., CPR): BLS–required to obtain within 60 days of hire/transfer (2 yr renewal)

Performs specimen receipt and distribution of laboratory specimens, labels tubes and specimen containers, collects specimens and performs simple tests under supervision. Performs phlebotomist duties as assigned.
