Surgical First Assist PRN Days Position Summary
Under the direction of the Nurse, performs sub-professional duties including utilizing sterile technique to assist physicians during surgery.. Assists licensed staff and physicians as directed within approved standards. Performs other related duties as directed. Assumes the responsibility for meeting the basic needs of all patients assigned. Provides care to a patient population ranging from infant to geriatric, unless otherwise indicated. Works collaboratively with the health care team, is customer focused and strives to meet unit and hospital goals. Provides quality care according to established practice standards and guidelines for the area(s) assigned. Must be willing/able to float to other (comparable) nursing units, as requested/needed. Under the direct supervision of the surgeon performs assistant tasks during intra-operative procedures.
THE SURGICAL FIRST ASSIST PRN DAYS CANDIDATE WILL POSSESS THE FOLLOWING EDUCATION, LICENSE/CERTIFICATIONS, AND EXPERIENCE.

Education
1. High school graduate or equivalent
2. Graduate of an approved Operating Room Technician Course.
3. Successful completion of Surgical First Assistant program
4. Successful completion of hospital service orientation program
5. Attends Skills Fair and completes yearly competency checklists
6. Must have current BCLS certification
7. Previous hospital experience preferred
8. Competently performs unit specific duties as assigned

4. Must perform duties within scope of practice and conforming to standards of practice.
5. Must have the ability to exercise tact and diplomacy when dealing with physicians, patients and family members.
6. Discretion is required in handling confidential information.
7. Must be able to work irregular schedules, weekends, and holidays due to staffing and census fluctuations.

Responsible for ensuring appropriate equipment is available; reviewing permit to confirm procedure; assist in moving and positioning patient; providing assistance throughout the procedure in a variety of surgical techniques.
Education:
Required: Graduate of a CAAHEP accredited program.
Preferred: Associate degree.
Experience:
Required: 3 years scrub and/or assisting experience.
Preferred: 5 years as surgical technician.
Certifications:
Required: AHA BLS, Surgical Technology certification, Surgical First Assistant certification, currently licensed, certified, or registered to practice profession as required by law, regulation in state of practice or policy.
