Summary
The Sterile Processing Tech cleans, inspects, and prepares routine and specialty instrument sets and specialty trays for Surgery Department. Is knowledgeable about the names of surgical instruments and on which trays they belong. Is knowledgeable about the fundamentals of asepsis, and ensuring proper protocols are followed to ensure appropriate sterilization of instruments and trays.
QualificationsRequired Training/Education/Experience/Certification:
Successful completion of IAHCSMM certification within 6 months of hire or transfer into the department (unless equivalent SPD Certification already completed).
Desired Training/Education/Experience/Certification:
(1) Completion of an approved Sterile Processing Technician course,
(2) Operating Room Technician experience, or (3) IAHCSMM Certification (or equivalent SPD Certification).
Must be able to complete simple math problems well enough to itemize instruments being prepared. Must be able to follow instructions, work quickly and accurately in a fast-paced environment. Analytical and grammatical skills are necessary to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing. Organizational and multi-tasking skills are essential. Must be fluent in spoken and written English. Must be able to fulfill the essential functions of the position.

Responsible for activities including, but not limited to decontamination, assembly, and sterilization of surgical instrumentation including various software applications, assembly, and delivery of surgical and interventional procedure case carts, paring and replenishment of materials, and working in collaboration with surgical partners to provide accurate and complete surgical instrumentation and needed supplies.
Education:
Required: High school diploma or GED. Completion of a formal Sterile Processing Technician course with field training or 1 year of experience as Sterile Processing Technician or Operating Technician.
Experience:
Preferred: 1 year as sterile processing technician with completion of formal sterile processing technician course.
Certifications:
Required: Must be certified with IAHCSMM or CBSPD within 1 year.
Preferred: Current certification through internationally recognized organizations such as IAHCSMM (International Association of Healthcare Central Service Materials Management) or Certification Board for Central Sterile Processing.
