The team is building on a history of Ford innovation, including our invention of the three-way catalytic converter to modernize vehicle emissions controls in the 1970s and the world’s first rear inflatable seat belts in 2010.

The Materials and Manufacturing Research Laboratory in Ford’s Research and Advanced Engineering organization is seeking an employee to work in the Coatings and Surfaces Research Department. The department’s focus is on fundamentally understanding coatings and surfaces that are applied in the manufacturing of automobiles. The research in this group is multidisciplinary and includes topics such as: surface characterization of various materials, battery cell manufacturing, corrosion, color science, and adhesion. Additionally, we also incorporate computer simulations to model manufacturing processes of materials and surfaces. This exciting research role requires, a multi-functional relationship with several organizations within Ford, which include Ford Model e, Ford Blue, Ford Ion Park, Basic Design, and Manufacturing.

What you'll do...

  • Perform fundamental and applied research in corrosion of automotive-relevant materials and structures, in particular coatings and pre-treatments for automotive materials and structures made from a mixture of materials.
  • Develop a robust, multidisciplinary research portfolio focused on the corrosion behavior of materials used in the automotive industry. A particular emphasis in this position will be the characterization of emerging metals and alloys in wrought, extruded, and cast forms, and the interaction of their microstructures with state of the art pre-treatments, coatings, and adhesives.
  • Develop advanced characterization techniques using electrochemical instruments, sensors, and custom test objects to generate in-situ measurements of corroding systems.
  • Apply a multi-analysis approach to test and improve the correlation between accelerated lab corrosion tests and field exposures.
  • Collaborate deeply with internal Surface Science, Process Simulation, Joining, Paint, and Metal Forming teams.
  • Support efforts to develop multi-scale simulation tools for vehicle corrosion resistance in service.
  • Grow a network of collaboration inside of Ford with Product Development, Vehicle Operations Manufacturing Engineering, Materials Engineering, Ford Ion Park, and the Design Studio, and outside of Ford with universities, government laboratories and suppliers.
  • Document research via internal reports and external publications and presentations.

  • Ph.D. in Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry or Physics or a related physical science field of study with a thesis emphasis on corrosion science or corrosion engineering, OR Master of Science in Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry or Physics or a related physical science field of study AND 5+ years of experience with corrosion of automotive materials.
  • 3+ years of hands-on experience with electrochemical analysis for corrosion studies of coatings on steel and aluminum substrates.
  • 3+ years of experience with experimental design, and analysis of electrochemical and corrosion data.

Even better, you may have...

  • Extensive knowledge of corrosion science for automotive-relevant materials – including steel, galvanized steel, aluminum, stainless steel, and magnesium alloys – in bare, coated, and mixed-material scenarios, under vehicle service conditions.
  • Hands-on experience with electrochemical instruments and techniques for corrosion research.      Expertise in the use of Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy for coating assessments and Rotating Disc Electrode for surface-electrolyte interactions is especially sought.
  • Experience with metallurgical and surface analysis techniques: SEM, AFM, FTIR, XRD, XRF, GDOES, TEM.
  • Experience with CAD, MatLab, multi-physics simulation software.
  • Outstanding digital literacy as well as written and oral communication skills.
  • Great teammate with strong interpersonal skills.
  • Keen interest in the automotive industry, in particular materials engineering and manufacturing processes for high quality, cost-efficient vehicle construction.
