The Climate Control Technician works full-time at the Michigan Proving Grounds (MPG) in Romeo. The technician is responsible for Building, Instrumenting, and de-instrumenting Vehicle Thermal, Refrigerant, EHAD, and Air Handling test benches for Development, Signoff Testing, Certification, and Special Tests as well as maintaining all instrumentation and equipment used at MPG. The technician will be expected to work with local and co-located employees (represented and non-represented Ford personnel) and communicate with testing, engineering, and management teams.
This position may require Day or Afternoon shift work schedule or pattern.
What You'll Do…
Responsibilities for Candidates may vary and include but are not limited to:
- Build Thermal Management System (Vehicle Refrigerant, Powertrain, HEV/BEV cooling systems and Air handling systems) test benches per set-up dimensions and/or engineering inputs/requests
- Perform Thermal Management Sub System testing per engineering procedures, industry standards, and/or engineering requests. Tests include (but not limited to) flow, pressure drop, temperature, NVH, amperage draw, airflow, component position, pressure, lifecycle testing, etc.
- Train other Technicians and cross train for all Lab Responsibilities
- Charge and evacuate refrigerant systems (Bench and Vehicle) with required refrigerant, balance oil, and troubleshoot refrigerant systems as needed
- Install/build/wire/instrument systems and components such as thermocouples, pressure transducers, pressure differentials, flow meters, accelerometers, shunts, LV, HV, Airflow, etc.
- Set-up and build DAQ systems needed for testing in the lab or with vehicles
- Properly dispose of refrigerants, coolant, oils, etc. per Ford/EPA standards
- Perform low voltage wiring and soldering to build electrical harnesses and cabling to support testing and/or instrumentation
- Fabricate Instrumentation and Control equipment (Actuator controllers, Shunt box’s, etc.)
- Remove/install/troubleshoot/repair Thermal Management Systems on vehicles as requested by engineering
- Maintain hoist usage requirements per Ford’s procedures
- Maintain vehicle driving requirements per Ford’s procedures
- Remove/store/retrieve, transport as needed, package/bag/box up, and label parts and instrumentation per the Lab’s storage system(s)/procedure(s)
- Perform any necessary testing requested by Ford’s Thermal Systems Management Engineering
- Validate, maintain, diagnose and repair of all instrumentation data recording equipment throughout testing
- Modify data acquisition equipment as necessary to support changing vehicle architectures
- Follows proving ground processes and safety protocols
- Communicate all issues with engineering and management via email, text messages, conference calls and face to face conversations.
- Anticipate future instrumentation, equipment and supplies needs required to support upcoming tests.
- Drive vehicles to pick up and drop off, Parts, Equipment, Vehicles, etc. Between MPG, local (MI) suppliers and local (MI) Ford Engineering Locations
- Perform calibrations on test equipment, as necessary for testing.
- Coordinate sending out equipment for calibration as required.
- Maintain daily calibration records.
- Coordinate and order all equipment/supplies to support lab operations.
Ability to:
- Diagnose electrical system faults
- Troubleshoot and repair complex instrumentation set ups
- Work with computer software systems and, to learn new software applications
- Work with Power and non-powered Handtools (wrenches, screwdrivers, drills, saws, etc.)
- Work independently without specific direction

- Dues and Membership are governed by the UAW Constitution, Federal laws, and State laws.

You'll Have…
- High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent
- Solid organizational skills including proven ability to multi-task
- Solid verbal and written communication skills
- Proficient in utilizing MS Office (Excel, Word, Outlook), WebEx and SharePoint Sites
- Capable of obtaining a Tier II driver rating (required)
- Able and willing to work flexible hours and holidays as necessary to support testing
- Knowledge of vehicle wiring systems and communication (CAN, LIN, 12V, ethernet, etc.)
Even Better, You'll Have…
- Associates in engineering technology or equivalent
- Two years’ experience in Automotive Thermal Systems Development Testing
- Knowledge of Climate Systems (Evap and Blower Assembly, Air Handling Sub-System and Refrigerant Systems) and Cooling Systems
- MAC Refrigerant Recovery and Recycling Certified
- Must be Certified to work on high voltage electrical vehicle systems (400V & 800V)
- Experience with data acquisition systems – installation, troubleshooting, repair, etc (preferred)
- Lab View, IP Motion, ATI Vision (preferred)
