Jupiter is hiring a dynamic individual to contribute to our next generation of climate risk products. You will work with data scientists, physical scientists, and software engineers to address a wide variety of problems in weather and climate, ocean modeling, hydrology, extremes, uncertainty quantification, etc. You will support customer inquiries as they arise, and contribute to interpretations that support Jupiter’s customers. Innovations in the application of climate science, data science methods and algorithms, as well as cloud and open-source solutions will provide you with the opportunity to expand your toolbox and think differently about climate risk. This role can be based at any of our 3 office locations in New York City, Boulder, CO or San Mateo, CA.
What your responsibilities include:
- Provide technical leadership on climate and weather related issues in research and development activities.
- Evaluation and integration of observational datasets, climate reconstructions and reanalysis, and climate model output, including their tradeoffs and how they are being used in the community.
- Engage with the climate science community, including tracking and reporting on emerging research and innovations.
- Collaboration with science leadership, project managers, and other science and software development teams to scope deliverables, organize projects and manage execution and delivery.
- Understand Jupiter’s scalable cloud-based computing environment, and ensure product compliance.
- Communicate results, analysis, and interpretation both internally and externally, including customer interaction.
What you bring to the role:
- A Doctorate or Masters degree from an accredited college or university with a field of study closely related to climate or atmospheric science; or a Doctorate or Masters degree from an accredited college or university with a field of study focused on data science, applied statistics, or machine learning with experience in climate-related research and development.
- At least 5 years of experience in the field, which may include work towards a Ph.D; focus areas may include downscaling, tropical cyclones, extremes, climate modeling, and/or climate risk.
- Proficiency in programming with a relevant language such as Python. Experience with software development best practices, cloud or HPC environments, and agile development is a plus.
- Experience with statistical and machine learning methods.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment, collaborating with team members with different scientific and technical backgrounds.
- Excellent communication skills.
