Summary/Objective

Provide management and administrative support to the Wildlife Biologist.  This is a training position; selected candidate will be expected to be promoted or relocated at the discretion of the Resource Management Branch to meet goals and needs of the Branch.

Essential Job Duties

  • Provide habitat management assistance for grassland, woodland, glades, forests, dove fields, food plots, etc.
  • Perform prescribed fires, invasive species control, forest management, woody vegetation removal, and assist with wildfire response.
  • Monitor area users and wildlife inventories, wildlife surveys, managed hunt data, and assist with CWD surveillance.
  • Compile routine reports, prepare work plans, track accomplishments, etc.
  • Assist with district budget and monitor expenditures, including bidding for goods and services and contract development.
  • Maintain MDC owned or rented equipment.
  • Inspect and maintain boundary, sign, gate, and grazing unit, facility, and shop.

Ancillary Job Duties

  • Assist with district and regional projects as part of a multi-disciplinary work team.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree in Wildlife Management, Biological Science, Zoology, or related field.
  • Must maintain a valid, current driver's license.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to operate ATVs and power tools.
  • Ability to read and interpret topographic and soil survey maps.
  • Ability to keep focused on understanding, anticipating and responding to the needs of customers.
  • Ability to define a problem, analyze relevant information, and develop solutions and plans to solve the problem.
  • Ability to maintain focus and intensity, and remain optimistic and persistent even under adversity.
  • Ability to develop and sustain cooperative working relationships.
  • Ability to handle multiple, diverse tasks of a complex nature and employ good time management techniques.
  • Ability to work varying hours and shifts.

Work Environment

  • Significant portion of work is performed in varying field environments.
  • Occasionally perform outdoors where hot, cold, wet and/or humid conditions exist.
  • Occasionally exposed to loud noises which may require the use of hearing protection.

Physical Abilities

  • Move about grounds, both inside and outside of buildings.
  • Constantly operate a computer and other office productivity machinery.
  • Frequently communicate and exchange accurate information.
  • Clarity of vision and three-dimensional vision.
  • Regularly lift up to 5 pounds, correctly lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Regular attendance is a necessary and essential function.

This position has been determined to be Nonexempt according to the Fair Labor Standards Act.  Employees must agree to accept compensatory time in lieu of cash payments in accordance with the Department's Compensatory Time Off and Overtime Policy. 

Salaried and hourly employees are expected to use a mobile device-cellular phone for Department business, as needed.
