Purpose
Contributes to the overall success of the Tax Department in Europe ensuring specific individual goals, plans, initiatives are executed / delivered in support of the team’s business strategies and objectives. Ensures all activities conducted are in compliance with tax legislation, governing regulations, internal policies and procedures.
Accountabilities
Champions a customer focused culture to deepen client relationships and leverage broader Bank relationships, systems and knowledge.
Manage UK corporation tax compliance process including preparing and submitting tax returns for UK branches and subsidiaries, negotiating and agreeing returns with HMRC and organising UK tax payments.
Provide assistance to Senior Manager, Scotiabank (Ireland) DAC in respect of Irish tax matters.
Provide quarterly and monthly tax charge information for consolidation purposes and local management information. Oversee preparation of the year end corporation tax and deferred tax provisions for statutory accounts and liaising with external auditors.
Advise senior executives and front office staff of the tax implications of specific transactions or business proposals.
Regular update of Bank’s tax policy and business strategy by evaluating the potential risk of current tax procedures. Reviewing the implementation and compliance with the Tax Governance policy.
Management of tax internal controls, including preparation and ongoing review of tax procedures. Provide assistance to the Tax Director with respect to internal controls.
Manage the Bank’s tax risk by maintaining the Tax Risk Register
Monitor changes in UK legislation through preparation of Tax Technical Monitor.
Prepare and maintain UK transfer pricing documentation.
Maintain a working knowledge of the business related tax laws of the overseas jurisdictions where GBM Europe operates. Monitor impact of major legislative changes and advise senior management and the front office accordingly.
Dealing with any withholding tax, treaty relief and tax reclaim matters. Prepare/review l tax documentation prepared for subsidiary and Branch.
Provide operational tax advice and guidance as required (FATCA, FTT, stamp duty etc.) and submit Automatic Exchange of Information returns.
Prepare Canada Customs and Revenue Authority (CCRA) T 106 Returns for subsidiaries and liaise with EO Tax regarding any queries.
Deliver high-quality and timely responses to the Head Office in relation to the audit by CRA and assist with EO Taxation projects
Responsible for calculation and management of the Bank’s bank levy position.
Responsible for production of quarterly Exco Tax Pack.
Provide estimates of CT liability and assist with profit sale and profit remittance process.
Preparation of accounting journals and monthly reconciliation of tax accounts.
Annual preparation of Bank and Building Society returns.
Provide accurate and timely technical support to other back office functions and Front Office.
Ad hoc research and projects such as transfer pricing, legislative developments and international tax issues.
Build relationships with the wider Finance team and internal stakeholders, such as compliance, internal audit and HR.
Understand how the Bank’s risk appetite and risk culture should be considered in day-to-day activities and decisions.
Actively pursues effective and efficient operations of his/her respective areas, while ensuring the adequacy, adherence to and effectiveness of day-to-day business controls to meet obligations with respect to operational risk, regulatory compliance risk, AML/ATF risk and conduct risk, including but not limited to responsibilities under the Operational Risk Management Framework, Regulatory Compliance Risk Management Framework, AML/ATF Global Handbook and the Code of Conduct.
Contributes to a high performance environment and fosters an inclusive work environment; supporting the vison/values/business strategy for the team.
Experience/Education
This is a technical role involving considerable initiative. Although the incumbent will be supported by the European Head of Tax and the Senior Manager, SIDAC, they will need to display considerable autonomy as an SME for taxation.
A professional qualification and a minimum of 5 years relevant tax experience are required, ideally gained through in banking or financial services.
CTA an advantage
The ability to understand and digest complex legislation and technical information is essential.
Familiarity with Alphatax software an advantage.
The Tax Team play a vital role as business partners to the front office. It is essential that the incumbent is capable of managing conflicting deadlines and is able to provide a prompt service to the front office to ensure that business is allowed to continue smoothly.
