We have an exciting opportunity for an Environmental Lead Advisor to join the Asset Strategy & Policy Team at Yorkshire Water and be a part of helping Yorkshire Water to provide the best service to our customers. Could this be you?
What we do:
Everyone has an idea of what a water company does. Here in Yorkshire, we make sure that over 5.4 million people living in the region and the millions of people who visit our region each year, can rely on our services, and have clean and safe drinking water on tap and that their wastewater is taken away. But for us, it’s so much more than this.
We look after communities, protect the environment, and plan to look after Yorkshire’s water, today, tomorrow 24/7, 365 days a year. We provide essential water and wastewater services to every corner of the Yorkshire region, and play a key role in the region’s health, wellbeing, and prosperity.
New environmental legislation, unprecedented levels of investment and changing expectations from customers means that this is an exciting time to discover opportunities within the water industry
We are a small close knit team of nine, who make the time to regularly collaborate in person. Working as part of the wider Asset Strategy and Policy function we are responsible for influencing and negotiating with regulators and stakeholders to enable sustainable environmental improvements. You will develop skills and knowledge in a wide range of topics but also have the opportunity to specialise. The role is varied and interesting with no two days being the same.
We embrace a flexible working model, where our hybrid setup typically requires an average of 2 day in the office site per week. This could be slightly more when collaborative efforts, training or meeting deadlines demand it. For those who prefer to work on-site, our office is open Monday-Friday during working hours.
Where you fit in:
As our Lead Environmental Advisor you will provide expert advice to the business on matters concerning environmental regulation, permitting and modelling.
You will ensure resolution of regulatory issues/risks by effectively influencing negotiations with the Environment Agency (EA) nationally and regionally on current and future environmental legislation and regulatory interpretation that impact on permitted and licenced activities.

You will provide advice to the business on the impact of new, changed and existing environmental legislation, where a precedent does not already exist. e.g. the proposed move from water resources licences to environmental permits. You will then work with the EA and internal colleagues to establish the requirements e.g. permit conditions and applicability to abstraction activities.
You will lead on environmental investigations, including management of one or more teams of external specialist consultants.
You will also help lead the development of the quality programme aspect of Asset Management Plan submissions, e.g. using knowledge of future regulatory change to advise the business on timescales and costs for implementing change in the new AMP programme.
