The difference our new Electromagnetic Effects Controller will make

 

Babcock have been awarded the contract to operate and modernised the UK MOD satellite network, Skynet. As part of this programme, we are looking for an experienced EM Controller with current expertise in defence standards and UK legislative requirements for EMC and RF Effects. This role will be responsible for:

 

  • Specifying appropriate protection against RF hazards for both personnel and equipment within ground infrastructure projects.
  • Supporting project teams by way technical consultation, assessing if their proposals may present an RF hazard or risk creating interference to existing RF transmission and receiving systems.
  • Timely submission of relevant notifications, registrations and consents to the Health & Safety Executive for radiation hazards.
  • Reviewing EM Radiation test documentation for purposes including EMC, EM hazard assessment and national defence infrastructure assurance.
  • Assisting project teams in achieving EMC compliance on a wide variety of systems.
  • Maintaining accurate records and logs to allow future reference. Specifying audits and routine maintenance as required to maintain safety and legislative compliance.
  • Supporting with the designing and creation of representative setups of complex systems and equipment in laboratory environments to then be used for formal EM Testing.
  • Understanding subcontracts and/or partnerships with test houses, in addition to creating test specifications, overseeing the test house’s production of test reports and the mitigation and resolution of test failures.
  • Authoring design guides, policies and safe systems of work associated with minimising undesirable EM effects on site including RF radiation hazards, EM interference, and vulnerability to radiation. 
  • Assist in the creation of contingency plans associated with accidental exposure of personnel to radiation hazards.

The role holder shall act as the authorising engineer for radiation hazards within the Skynet ground infrastructure, with delegated authority to appoint all radiation protection officers, advisers and supervisors required to operate and maintain the system in a safe manner.

Experience

  • Experience of working to the UK legislative framework for electromagnetic compatibility (i. EMC Directive, Radio Equipment Directive, UK Radio Equipment Regulations and UK Control of Electro Magnetic Fields at Work Regulations)
  • Experience of working to the UK legislative framework for radiation safety (The Ionising Radiations Regulations 2017, The Electromagnetic Fields (EMF) Directive
  • Experience of working as, or in close collaboration with Radiation Protection Officers, Advisers and Supervisors
  • Awareness of EM and RF principles and theory
  • Awareness of EM Test Requirements, Test Plans and Test Reports
  • Knowledge of TEMPEST - Desirable
  • Experience in the protection of both devices and personnel against nuclear radiation - Desirable
  • Training in protection from CBRN - Desirable

 

Qualifications

  • Minimum of HNC in Electrical/Electronic Engineering or Physics plus required experience or Degree in Electrical/Electronic Engineering or science equivalent and aiming to achieve professional registration in future.
  • A health and safety qualification to Level 5 such as NEBOSH, NCRQ, NVQ/SVQ 5 Diploma - Desirable
