The Opportunity

 

The Transport Engineer will work within the multidisciplinary Dangerous Goods & Spent Fuel Services Team that delivers EDF Energy’s Dual Mission: the safe defueling of our nuclear reactors, and supporting continued operations at our generating sites.

 

Your role will be to work with internal and external stakeholders at our seven AGR stations, our suppliers and regulators to provide through life management of road, rail and infrastructure assets used to facilitate the safe and compliant removal of spent fuel from our sites. You will have a direct bearing on the safety and efficiency of the spent fuel transport process.

 

Pay, benefits and culture

  

We can offer a competitive salary from £40,069 to £71,779 and you’ll be appointed based on the parameters outlined in the Nuclear Generation Company Agreement as well as your existing salary, competence, experience and qualifications.

What you’ll be doing

 

You will ensure our AGR fleet maintains an effective and compliant transport capability, capable of sustaining performance to deliver the business plan requirements. You will provide oversight, technical support and advice for the road, rail and infrastructure assets required to enable spent fuel movements for EDF Energy. Furthermore, you will be responsible for:
 

  • Ensuring asset management plans are appropriate and are maintained for critical transport and infrastructure assets;
  • Acting as station interface for transport development, identifying and progressing requirements to refurbish or replace assets;
  • Ensuring adequate quality standards are applied by our site staff, contract partners and suppliers to all assets;
  • Driving performance improvement across all assets;
  • Ensuring maximum availability of assets to support end user requirements;
  • Managing the reporting of transport performance and risk against business plan;
  • Providing oversight of contractor performance and contractual arrangements;
  • Collaborating with the EDF Fleet Compliance Manager to assess Goods Vehicle Operator Licence compliance and directing improvements where necessary;
  • The application of industry best standards to our operations.

 

Who you are

 

You will hold a minimum of a HNC qualification in a relevant subject. A degree level qualification would be advantageous. 

 

Other skills and experience we’re looking for you to bring into this role include:

 

  • Stakeholder management experience across multiple operational sites and suppliers, with the ability to influence and to create positive working relationships;
  • The ability to react quickly to complex operational issues and give clear and timely advice to site staff;
  • The ability to plan long term solutions and improvements whilst prioritising ongoing operations;
  • A quick learning, problem solving mindset with a bias for action;
  • Experience in managing suppliers and commercial contracts;
  • Working knowledge of health, safety, and environmental legislation.

 

Awareness of the arrangements for removing spent fuel from our AGR sites, as well as the road and rail transport equipment and infrastructure at each site (including partner sites) would be advantageous. Experience of asset management in the nuclear or other highly regulated industries would be desirable, as is familiarity with heavy transport regulations and The Carriage of Dangerous Goods Regulations.
