Alstom is the UK & Ireland’s leading supplier of new trains, train services, and signalling infrastructure projects. It has built just under 40% of the UK’s mainline train fleet, all the fleets currently in service with London Underground and Dublin’s LUAS.
It is building the UK’s biggest train programme in a generation – AVENTRA - for seven of the UK’s largest train operating companies, is ramping up to build the next generation of Greater Dublin’s commuter trains, DART+ as well as 54 HS2 high-speed trains in a Joint Venture. Alstom also supports 66% of the UK fleet through its Services business and is the UK’s leading CP6 signalling & infrastructure provider.
Employing 6,000 people across the UK and Ireland, we design, build and test trains at the UK’s largest end-to-end train manufacturing factory in Derby and operate major sites at Widnes, Crewe, Ilford and Plymouth, as well as 30 train services depots across the UK&I.
Your future role
Take on a new challenge and apply your Engineering/Technologist expertise in a new cutting-edge field. You’ll report to the Principal Engineering Technologist and work alongside respected, resourceful teammates.
You’ll participate in the development and / or improvement of tools and processes within the business including requirements capture, planning, specifications, design, implementation, testing and roll out. The Engineer / Technologist participates in the development, introduction and delivery of Signalling processes and tools and into the UK market. This portfolio currently includes SMARTBENCH, SMARTCERT, Data Validation Tool, SML Support System and Test Environment, SML auto testing and Enhanced Technical Assurance Process. Day-to-day, you’ll work closely with teams across the business SS&I, Training providers. Assist in ensuring that tools and processes remain fit for purpose and enable continuous improvement of them by proactively suggesting and implementing improvements. and much more.
You’ll specifically take care of the development of signalling processes, but also configuration and testing.
We’ll look to you for:
- To understand the basics of regulations that apply to signalling engineering and the railway in general e.g. temporary works, CSM, CDM, electricity at work etc.
- Participate in the delivery / improvement of Signalling tools and processes.
- Ensure activities are delivered on time and to budget.
- Contribute to improvements in processes and tools within the Alstom signalling business.
- Ensure IRSE logbook and Authority to Work are maintained and regularly reviewed.
- Ensure mentorship plans are in place for mentored activities and proactively review with mentor.
- To develop an understanding of EHS systems and best practice
- To be able to input information such as close calls etc into iForm and other Alstom IT tools.
- To understand the basics of regulations that apply to signalling engineering and the railway in general eg temporary works, CSM, CDM, electricity at work etc.
- Ensure work is performed in a safe and effective manner and in accordance with the Health & Safety at Work Act (1974), Electricity at Work Regulations (1989), Railway Group Standards, and relevant Alstom Procedures.

- HND or equivalent in an engineering or mathematical based subject or equivalent work experience.
Ability to carry out configuration works on at least one of the following systems-
- MCS o VHLC / ElectroLogIXS
- SMARTLOCK (scheme and VIXL data)
- SMARTLOCK (support system and test environment)
- Automated production and testing services.
AND/OR
Ability to write software in one of the following languages-
- VB.NET
- C#.NET
- ET o C++
