Energy Storage & Optimisation (ES&O) is now looking for a System Engineer to be part of the growing global project delivery team. This position reports to the area manager in project delivery. The preferred location for this permanent position is in Fareham office in UK. Working remotely will also be an option for this position.

 

This position will be a member of Wartsila's internal and customer technical subject matter expert team for Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects and products and will work closely with the following groups: Project Management, Product Delivery, Software Delivery, Commissioning Management and other various groups to ensure BESS projects fulfil grid code, customer functionality and contract requirements.

 

The System Engineer is responsible for overseeing the project engineering (compliance, functional, electrical, controls, communication, and minor software), commissioning, and technical support for AC and DC electrical systems (including power systems) associated with utility-scale Battery Energy Storage Systems.

 

Responsibilities as a System Engineer:
 

  • Support project managers in their delivery project technical engineering as their leading subject matter expert and support external and internal stakeholders
  • Lead the technical engineering and communicate/collaborate with relevant stakeholders in the coordination and preparation of technical material and documentation in accordance with the project contract, schedule and budget
  • Review project technical specifications and detailed electrical engineering plans produced by others and provide precise organised feedback in a timely manner to ensure that project requirements will be met
  • Communicate/establish and maintain the compliance criteria, functional and technical requirements in accordance with applicable grid codes, standards and specifications
  • Engineer, calculate and specify appropriate system components, ratings and quantities and create detailed bills of material to communicate to and follow-up with purchasing and logistics
  • Communicate/collaborate/follow-up with external and internal stakeholders proactively to secure first-time-right principals on deliverables
  • Support commissioning team in their regular activities but lead special requirement and compliance testing
  • Occasionally perform site visits and field inspections to identify risks or faults originating from engineering/manufacturing and communicate root cause and corrective actions as well as improve engineering
  • Ability to travel to domestic and international project sites, customer and/or vendor venues (Approx. 10 - 15%)

 
You should have a solid, proven understanding of fundamental electrical engineering, project management and construction principles, as well as experience in engineering high-power utility connected electrical systems
 
Minimum Skills & Requirements:

 

  • Minimum bachelor’s or master’s degree in electrical or power engineering, or equivalent work experience
  • 3 years of relevant project work experience, preferably with renewable energy with distribution or transmission level energy storage systems
  • Understands and can articulate a diverse range of operating methods for utility scale electrical power systems, including renewable energy, energy storage, and conventional generation technologies (including any combination of these systems in hybrid configurations)
  • Able to explain in detail the electrical principals of voltage, current, real and reactive power, energy, charge, AC/DC voltage, single-phase, and three-phase power, and other fundamental electrical engineering concepts
  • Able to read and understand CAD drawings. Especially electrical, single-line, three-line, fire safety systems, and communication diagrams
  • Understanding relevant grid codes and standards for BESS and inverter systems (IEC and country adaptations/version, IBC, IFC, NFPA, NEC, UL)
  • Understanding of Inverter, Converter, Transformer, Battery, Circuit breaker, Fuse, AC/DC power supply electrical equipment
  • Knowledge of multi-meters, oscilloscopes power quality analysis, harmonics, and their operation
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including ability to effectively communicate highly complex engineering, construction, and operational issues
  • Able to periodically work across global time zones to support the global team but predominantly in your own area time zones
  • Able to embrace the fast and dynamic environment of a growth stage company, comfortable with adjusting quickly to changing priorities

 

Beneficial in this position:

 

  • Familiar with lithium-ion battery
  • Experience and understanding with PSS/E, PSCAD, and/or DigSilent 
  • Experience with utility-scale energy storage and renewable energy projects and products (bi-directional inverters, various battery chemistries, PV, wind turbines, flywheels, etc.)
  • Experience with industrial control methods and SCADA systems
  • Ability to configure and troubleshoot programmable logic controllers (PLC) and industrial electronic equipment (protection relays, inverters, BMS, etc.)
