Job Descrption

Development and Alumni Relations (DAR) supports Johns Hopkins’ focus on research, teaching and patient care, and its role as a national and global leader in higher education. We create and foster enduring relationships that result in advocacy and philanthropic support for Johns Hopkins University & Medicine; strengthening the institution through partnerships with donors, alumni, volunteer leaders, faculty, students, staff, and patients.


The Director of Gift Planning reports to the Executive Director of Gift Planning. The Director supports planned giving initiatives for Johns Hopkins University and Medicine by delivering comprehensive services that facilitate major current and deferred gifts. The Director provides counsel and support to Associate Deans, Directors of Development, and Major Gift Officers in assigned divisions to identify, cultivate, motivate, and secure planned gifts. The Director provides key leadership in the promotion of planned giving techniques that accomplish personal charitable objectives and result in lifetime and testamentary gifts with substantial and lasting benefits. In addition, the Director is responsible for all aspects of the comprehensive training program on behalf of the Office of Gift Planning for the University and Medicine.


SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES


Monetary and Visit Goals:

  • Maintain an active portfolio of up to 100 planned giving prospects/donors and engage directly in planned giving gift identification, solicitation, cultivation and stewardship of individuals.
  • Prepare and direct preparation of planned gift proposals, solicitation materials, and other cultivation materials and stewardship information for planned giving donors.
  • Responsible for raising $7,000,000 per year.
  • Minimum visit goal/substantive actions of 100 per year with planned giving donors/prospects.


Donor and Gift Officer communication:

  • In coordination with Associate Deans, Directors of Development, and Major Gift Officers, communicate directly with donors, prospects, and their advisors to evaluate charitable objectives, analyze and recommend plans of giving, and secure gifts that meet the standards of the donor and the University.
  • Serve as a technical advisor to development staff requiring expertise related to structuring planned and other complex gifts.
  • Manage and grow the gift planning pipeline for assigned divisions. Meet as needed with Associate Deans, Directors of Development, and Major Gift Officers to develop solicitation and stewardship strategies. Conduct strategy sessions and implementation plans for agreed-upon strategies.


Trainings:

  • Assist with the development and implementation of training programs for philanthropy staff through University and Medicine with a minimum of two trainings on each campus per year to help philanthropy staff better understand the Office of Gift Planning and how best to partner with their assigned Gift Planner.
  • Develop materials for training, and as reference materials following the training. Maintain a comprehensive library of training materials.



Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Five years' experience in institutional advancement with the majority of experience acquired in the direct delivery of gift planning services.
  • Related experience in legal, accounting, tax, financial field may substitute for direct gift planning experience.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstrated success and effectiveness in planned giving fundraising required, preferably in a medical and education setting.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle multiple, complex fundraising activities simultaneously and coordinate solicitation strategies in a decentralized environment.
  • Superlative interpersonal skills with a demonstrated ability to work well with people at all levels of an organization, across a diverse range of educational and social backgrounds and to demonstrate an honest respect for each individual.
  • Ability to plan and implement a fundraising plan.
  • Superior written and oral communications skills; the ability to articulate and translate eloquently the complex goals, mission, and aspirations of the program for all audiences.
  • Ability and willingness to travel.
  • A broad understanding of multi-faceted campaign planning, implementation and management.
