The Department of Neurology is seeking JHNeurophyte Scholars to participate in an NIH-sponsored training program hosted by The Johns Hopkins NeuroHIV Comorbidities Scholar Program (JHNeurophytes). The JHNSP Scholars will conduct a short-term mentored research project in a laboratory or clinical research setting, under the guidance of a Principal Investigator(s) and the program staff. A midterm and/or final written report is required, and scholars will give a poster and oral presentation on their research experiences at the mid-point or end of the summer 2024 program.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
Conduct in-person (or virtual) laboratory or clinical research under the guidance of a mentor at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.
Perform laboratory tests and/or experiments following established procedures or protocols.
Operate requisite laboratory equipment and instruments; record data; maintain and make minor adjustments to equipment.
Prepare solutions, reagents, and stains following standard laboratory formulas and procedures.
Prepare, clean, sterilize, and maintain laboratory equipment, glassware, and instruments used in research experiments.
Monitor inventory levels, materials and supplies in accordance with established policies and procedures.
The scholar will attend in-person and virtual conferences and participate in regular lab meetings, seminars and journal clubs.
Scholars may also present findings from their research at scientific conferences and workshops held virtually and in-person.
Minimum Qualifications
Actively pursuing High School Diploma or graduation equivalent
Preferred Qualifications
Currently enrolled as an undergraduate college student (Freshman to rising Juniors)
Pursuing a degree in neuroscience, neurology, psychology or related science fields (biology, microbiology, biomedical engineering, chemistry, etc.)
Goal to attend graduate or medical (PhD or MD) school after graduation.
Able to attend in-person research in Baltimore, Maryland on a multi-year basis.
