Job Descrption

The Office for Institutional Equity (OIE) at the Johns Hopkins University (JHU) is seeking a highly qualified, motivated and skilled Equity Compliance Investigator to assist in the handling of equal opportunity issues involving members of the University community, including: assessing and investigating complaints of discrimination, harassment, sexual misconduct and retaliation, presenting educational programs related to University policy on relevant equal opportunity matters, and collaborating on the development of University policy and procedure.


Equity Compliance Investigators serve as a member of a dynamic team that provides administrative, educational, and intellectual leadership to support the University's equal opportunity compliance program. Equity Compliance Investigators provide professional and technical support to the Office for Institutional Equity by assessing, investigating and resolving discrimination and/or harassment complaints on the basis of sex, gender, marital status, pregnancy, race, color, ethnicity, national origin, age, disability, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, or veteran status, and by coordinating conflict resolution efforts. The position includes investigating alleged violations of Title IX of the Education Amendments Act of 1972, including allegations pertaining to violations of Title IX of the Education Amendments Act of 1972, including allegations pertaining to sexual violence, relationship violence and stalking.


Equity Compliance Investigators are a key partner in ensuring JHU's compliance with federal, state, and local laws in the area of equal opportunity. The work requires sound judgment and skill in applying equal opportunity principles and prevailing legal standards to solve complex problems with decisive action. Equity Compliance Investigators have the opportunity to collaborate frequently with colleagues to resolve case related challenges. OIE’s work has a significant impact on the individuals and divisions involved its cases. Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Serve as a point of contact for faculty, staff, and students on discrimination, harassment, sexual misconduct and retaliation claims.
  • Receive complaints from various members of the JHU community in a sensitive manner in order to determine whether to investigate or make an appropriate referral. Some cases may also involve meeting with individuals who are not members of the JHU community as well.
  • Conduct assessments and investigations of complaints of sexual misconduct (including sexual violence), other forms of protected class-based harassment, discrimination and retaliation.
  • Conduct interviews of complainants, respondents, witnesses, and management, and review relevant documentation, physical evidence, and statistical information.
  • Develop and prepare comprehensive reports based on facts revealed in investigations. Reports include, but are not limited to, analysis of applicable laws and JHU policies, factual background, summaries of allegations and witness interviews, and recommendations.
  • Provide input and/or testimony as needed in hearings or other disciplinary proceedings that stem from the investigations.
  • Participate in the evaluation and ongoing development of University policy and procedures related to sexual misconduct, harassment, discrimination and retaliation.
  • Deliver training and educational programs to various University community members, including senior management on discrimination, harassment, sexual misconduct and retaliation.
  • Perform other duties as assigned, including participation on University-wide committees or new initiatives.


Special Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Complaint processing experience in higher education.
  • Experience developing and presenting educational materials on sexual misconduct, harassment, discrimination, retaliation and diversity.


Minimum Qualifications
  • JD from an accredited law school required.
  • Five years of experience investigating and resolving discrimination/harassment complaints. Other comparable experience may serve as a substitute for investigatory experience (i.e. litigation experience, HR investigatory experience).

  • Ability to manage and work with conflict, including meeting with individuals who may be experiencing high levels of stress.

  • Ability and desire to work actively, collaboratively, and creatively as part of a team.
  • Demonstrated expertise in applying relevant federal, state and local laws.

 

 

Classified Title: Equity Compliance Investigator 
Role/Level/Range: ATP/04/PG  
Starting Salary Range: $98,800 - $173,300 Annually (Commensurate with experience) 
Employee group: Full Time 
Schedule: Monday - Friday 8:30am - 5:00pm 
Exempt Status: Exempt 
Location: Homewood Campus
