The Position:
This position concentrates on providing support services to students with disabilities, including intake interviews, personal/academic counseling, eligibility for services, and resource referrals. The position enhances student retention by developing programming that provides support system and development opportunities.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Knowledge of American Sign Language and other sign systems used by student/consumer; Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf Code of Professional Conduct; technical signs or specialized vocabulary used in the courses assigned; Deaf culture, local Deaf community, and resources for the d/Deaf; specialized equipment for the deaf and hard of hearing.
  • Demonstrate a strong customer service and/or student advocacy through a positive attitude of approachability, adaptability, strong problem—sowing and desire to identify and support student success.
  • Provide sign language coordination of interpreting services and Interpreting services for prospective and current Deaf and Hard of Hearing students and visitors-in all areas of the college where communication is necessary (including, but not limited to: tutoring, school-sponsored events, classrooms, meetings with instructors, Financial Aid, New Student Orientation, Admissions Tours, Advising, Assessment, Career Services, and Student Success & Retention).
  • Engage in behaviors that create an inclusive environment in which all people are valued and supported. Go beyond the easiest or surface answer for a student, or an internal or external customer, and get to the root cause of the problem, question or issue to solve it as quickly and professionally as possible.
  • Provide Disability Support Services information to prospective students, perform intake interviews, and participate in documentation review and determination of eligibility for accommodations
  • Provide referrals to campus support resources
  • Serve as a resource to internal Ivy Tech students, staff, and faculty, as well as community members regarding Disability Support Services
  • Participate in departmental and statewide Disability Support Services meetings, maintain up-to-date student records, forms and other specific documentation
  • Accurately interpret spoken language to sign language and interpret sign to spoken language for lecture classes, labs, meetings and various assignments as scheduled
  • Follow and give oral and written directions to students
  • Demonstrate sensitivity to, and respect for a diverse population
  • Maintain cooperative working relationships with students
  • Experience in academic environment, providing classroom interpreting in multiple subject areas (including math and science).
  • Must be comfortable working with a diverse population.
  • Possess good communication skills and the ability to work as a team member are required.
  • Possess excellent customer service skills.
  • Must be able to work nights and weekends if student requires support.

All responsibilities will be conducted within the parameters of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), other applicable regulatory requirements, and professional standards.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Director of DSS

SUPERVISION GIVEN: Full-time Interpreters and Part-time Interpreters

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor's degree with National Interpreter Certification (NIC) or Certification of Interpretation Certification required
  • Five (5) years proficient interpreting experience, with supporting references.
  • Work at multiple locations as needed. Work evenings and weekends as needed.
  • Experience in academic environment, providing classroom interpreting in multiple subject areas (including math and science).
  • Must be comfortable working with a diverse population.
  • Good communication skills and the ability to work as a team member are required.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Must also be able to process information quickly and to apply and relay that knowledge in the performance of his/her advising duties.
  • Considerable patience and diplomacy are necessary when dealing with difficult situations.
  • Must react quickly and appropriately when necessary.
  • Computer knowledge sufficient to apply basic computer software such as Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Outlook.

STARTING SALARY RANGE: $55,000 - $60,000 (based on experience)

CLASSIFICATION: E1 (exempt)
