Job Description

We are doing audit differently to rise above traditional functions. We have the opportunity to innovate and experiment in building the best possible audit model for Shawbrook. Aligning everything we do to supporting the business deliver great outcomes and value to customers and stakeholders. You will have a unique opportunity to help shape this.


We’ve been focussed on building credibility across the bank through transparency and agility in our ways of working, which is gaining momentum. This role helps us elevate the work we undertake as a mission critical part of the bank’s risk governance arrangements for the Board and senior management. 

This role is accountable for determining Internal Audit’s strategy and approach towards financial risk themes (covering credit, capital, liquidity, market, financial control, financial & regulatory reporting and model risk types). You’ll be leading our firmwide assessment of what matters most for a successful Shawbrook which aligns the divisional strategy for Internal Audit to Shawbrook’s overall strategy and measures of success. Building innovative models of maturity and performance assessment of risk, control, governance, outcomes and culture that best align Shawbrook to its strategy and purpose which meet the SMF5’s obligations under UK and global standards of professional practice. And prioritising internal and co-source resources towards the most strategically relevant assurance.

You’ll influence a broad range of stakeholders from our Board to auditees, team members to regulators. You’ll add strong expertise and insight in guiding our teams to assess and rigorously prioritise every possible part of the bank. And then importantly use both our own and broader firmwide data sources and external perspectives to build our quarterly opinion – joining the dots to provide insight and foresight for a bank on a mission. 

Key Role Responsibilities

  • Business understanding and alignment to strategy: You’ll be an impactful influencer with senior management and the Board. Identifying the critical aspects of firmwide strategy, providing critique on their viability and risks to delivery. Using committees and other interactions to challenge and coach the bank to stronger outcomes based on our own work, correlating various perspectives from Shawbrook as well as external market drivers. Using this understanding and challenge of Shawbrook’s strategy you’ll determine the optimal functional strategy to provide compelling, commercial valuable assurance to the Board and senior management.
  • Audit Universe: You’ll own the strategy and approach which builds a robust and defensible process which identifies every moving part of the bank. Using your in-depth knowledge of bank strategy, purpose and culture as well as asset classes, systems, processes, technology, change, capability, regulation and horizon scanning to supplement the bottom-up process with insightful assurance responses that support Shawbrook in creating value, meeting its objectives and delivering its strategy.
  • Assessment frameworks: You’ll determine the innovative and creative functional strategy to assess the performance and maturity of the bank’s approach to risk management, internal control, corporate governance, outcomes of key processes and culture. Be prepared to take courageous positions on the design, operation and sustainability of these approaches in the context of Shawbrook’s growth and maturity.
  • Advocacy for data and innovation: You’ll challenge how we can be maximise our use of data science and other innovative technology/working practices to deliver organisational value. You’ll be a role model and advocate for these approaches, always looking for how we can continually improve what and how we do things.
  • Domain expertise: You’ll be highly regarded by colleagues across the bank for your expert knowledge which you use to reach high quality and pragmatic outcomes. You are always aware of the regulatory or other external changes and thinking about how they’ll impact Shawbrook. You’ll be comfortable working in a matrix environment. Being prepared to challenge and be challenged on how we most effectively prioritise our resources to meet the outcomes of this role, our function, and Shawbrook. You’ll have market leading expertise in the coverage of financial risks and will provide coverage of senior executive relationships in our SME, Real Estate and Savings businesses as well as our CRO and CFO functions.
  • Build the portfolio of audit work: You’ll clearly define the specification for a wide variety of assurance responses (from on-going monitoring, workshops, change assurance, audits, thematic work programmes, etc) which align to your strategy to achieve assurance coverage of financial risk-types/and assessment of risk, control, governance, outcomes and culture,  coaching and performance managing  the delivery teams to ensure your specification’s are met.
  • Your expert judgement will be critical in prioritising coverage of the risk domains as well as broad strategic themes against your functional assurance strategy to support the SMF5, SMF1 and Board in their firmwide oversight responsibilities. You can clearly articulate why these responses are the right ones to meet your strategy and be clear on the consequences of responses we are unable to prioritise, communicating and engaging with stakeholders across the back to share this.
  • Audit Opinion: Build the Quarterly Opinion and bring this to life for business and functional committees, ExCo and Board. As the firms holistic assessment of risk management, internal control, corporate governance, outcomes of key processes and culture you’ll lead the assessment of these “top of the house” themes that underpin successful execution of bank strategy. Joining the dots to identify and resolve firmwide control themes and having the courage to call-out anything which threatens strategic delivery or regulatory compliance. You’ll be comfortable in challenging our Line 1 and 2 colleagues in the suitability of the status quo and driving stronger outcomes and higher levels of data-driven solutions so that Shawbrook can reliability deliver on its strategy. 
  • Team Development & Mentorship: You’ll play a pivotal role in fostering an agile and growth mindset within the function, supporting our team in developing their capabilities and understanding of the bank and their professional development through mentoring.

Qualifications

  • You will form part of a tight-knit, high-performing team who determine and execute the functional strategy, build capability, optimise ways of working and audit standards, the effectiveness of our platform, reporting and processes and lead the internal audit function on a day-to-day basis. You’ll be a team player, willing to role your sleeves up when needed and be courageous in taking difficult positions when required and in the best interests of the bank.
  • You may come from a professional services firm, be in a Line 1 or 2 role role or hold a senior role in internal audit. Either way you’ll be used to making an impact, being highly visible and present with our team and the broader business.
  • You’ll be accountable for leadership aligned to our experience principles (personal, practical, creative) and leadership framework. And for the function delivering to the highest standards against the revised Global Internal Audit Standards, UK FSIA Code and BCBS 223.
